Aardbeving Iran gevoeld in hele Golfregio

Het zuidoosten van Iran is dinsdag getroffen door een zware aardbeving. Zeker 40 mensen zijn omgekomen. Ook in Pakistan zijn zeker vijf doden gevallen. De Iraanse autoriteiten verwachten dat het dodental oploopt tot in de honderden, meldde persbureau Reuters. De beving had volgens de Amerikaanse geologische dienst USGS een kracht 7,8 op de schaal van Richter. Iraanse functionarissen spreken van de krachtigste aardbeving in 40 jaar. Het epicentrum lag in in de buurt van de plaats Khash bij de grens met Pakistan in woestijn- en bergachtig gebied. Volgens de eerste berichten in Iraanse media zijn zeker 40 mensen omgekomen. De aardbeving is volgens getuigen gevoeld in de hele Golfregio. In Iran, Pakistan en Dubai werden mensen geëvacueerd uit kantoorgebouwen. Zelfs in de Indiase hoofdstad New Delhi zijn sterke schokken gevoeld. Daar renden mensen de straat op.
